The lack of public investment during the perestroika period and Moldova's painful economic transition have resulted in an outdated and aging public transport infrastructure. Despite the government's efforts to modernize its public transport, especially in the capital Chisinau, many buses or coaches date from the Soviet period and are on the verge of collapsing with each trip.
